723 French country Farmhouse table, hand carved, reclaimed dining table, harvest table, farm table, French provincial, Portland Oregon, customizable

723 French country harvest table, reclaimed farmhouse table

This one is an original design by us, and was built, finished and shipped to a family in Georgia.

All of these shapely elements on the base are hand carved.  Solid poplar base is hand shaped with a scalloped apron and hand carved bead; Aprons are gently slanted outward and curved so that the transition into the leg is graceful and fluid.

Top is reclaimed Oregon barnwood that has been given a nice medium warm tobacco finish.

Here is what this barn wood looked like "before", while under construction in the shop.  The large patch was placed there to eliminate three awkward defects in that board, which was otherwise in  good condition.

Here is another view of this barn wood.  The antique texture and color will have to be replicated over the edges which have been shaped with a router, therefore stripping off the rustic surface and getting down to "new" wood.  The top will have to be cleaned, smoothed, hardened and colored without losing the rustic qualities of the original wood.

Here is a close view of the end in the "under construction" phase showing how the apron tilts forward at the smile and joins the leg in a nice smooth swoop.

And with many layers of distressed paint.  We started with a light olive, then a heavy bodied dove grey and followed with a Swedish white.

Showing contrast of this gentle, warm off white with the pure white background.  This table can be ordered in any size / color combination, with a natural top or a painted one.  We can also do a solid alder natural base and natural top.  The size shown here is 38 x 108 x 30h, and this is a great size and an elegant shape, and here is a link to order.

703 French farmhouse table, hand carved, made to order

This is an original design made by us.  It is of solid alder and has a hand carved bead along the apron and legs.

This was built for a couple in the Lake Sammamish Washington area.  They have a wonderful new house, but this house was built with character!  Like real stone (indoors, used for the walls) and real salvaged beams.  The dining area is long and narrow, and this refectory shaped table looks wonderful with the other furniture, many of which are genuine antiques.

Here is a view of the top.  At 120 x 34 x 30h (inches) it is a true refectory shape, long and narrow, and this shape looks really elegant and authentic for this design.  You can see some knots and color variation in this photo.

And here is a closer view, where you can see some of the deliberate erosion, rub-throughs, fake cracks, pegs, scratches, nicks dings, etcetera, all for the purpose of making it look old.

Another closeup.

All of these beads and graceful volutes are indeed hand carved by my husband Buck.  It is important that our work have evidence of "hand".

684 French harvest table, farmhouse table, solid wood dining table, large old world dining table

684 French harvest table, large old world dining table, farmhouse extension table

Here is a solid alder with rustic antique finish, "farmhouse" version of a table we designed and built as a bespoke project for a client who wanted voluptuous, curvy, romantic style legs.  This one pictured has a simple plank top and no leaves, but the style can be easily fitted with leaves.

This design is excellent for tall people, having plenty of legroom underneath this relatively short apron.  The table is 30 inches in height overall, and the floor to apron measurement is a generous 26 inches.

Here is what the top looks like with the sample at the edge.  We always send finish samples to you, so that you can choose colors in your own light.  Then, we use the sample to finish the piece.  The knot size and distribution on this top is rather typical for our alder boards.

Close view of the top showing the separate plank look.  These are separate planks, but they are tightly joined together, and the apparent "gap" between each board is actually only about 1/8 inch deep; therefore, any spilled liquids will not seep through to the floor.  This wears a living finish in a medium dark rich neutral brown.

Another close view of the top texture, showing dings, scratches, worm holes, cracks, etcetera (all of which are fake) and showing the small pegs we place next to each joint.  This shows a good example of a typical alder knot, a bit on the large side.  There are usually one or two of these on a typical top.

The size on this piece shown in these photos is 44 x 96 x 30h.  We are glad to make custom sizes and colors.  Please visit our online store here to check prices on this size.

642 Farmhouse table, made to order

642  Farmhouse table, harvest table, farm table

Classically-proportioned farmhouse table newly built by us with an authentic rustic finish.  We love the extra wide gently shaped aprons on this one.  Dimensions are 40 x 96.  As such this would seat 8 very comfortably and squeeze 10.

Here's a closer view of the apron.

Photo showing the entire top.  This top has breadboard ends.  The breadboard is the one at each end, running perpendicular to the main top.  It is a nice way to finish off the ends of a table, and I'll show you how we construct them, below.

Prior photos may have suggested that the top was a different color from the base, but this photo is more accurate.  On this one we aimed to get the top the same color, but with a little more of the finish rubbed off than on the legs and apron, with a little more finish built up at the apron corners, as shown.

This one has pegged joints and a breadboard end -- shown with the finish sample.  Each of our pieces gets finished to a sample that you select.  We do mail the samples to our clients so that you can look and choose in your own lighting.

Meant to have a very heavily distressed look.  As many times as I have tried to create shortcuts, it is just not practical to do so and get this sheen, this kind of "patina", and simultaneously the durability that I expect.  It is a very labor intensive process of about 35 very time consuming steps.

Close study of real antique finishes reveals that the most soulful finishes are those with plenty of subtle color variation.

Another piece of like ilk, but slightly different color.  I like the narrower breadboard shown here.

A series of pictures follows which shows breadboard construction method in our shop.

This is really a series of mortise and tenon joints.  Any time a board is joined perpendicular to any other boards, there must be provision made for seasonal expansion.  There are many ways to do this, but we always take care to do so, and this ensures that your piece will not warp, crack or split.  All cracks and splits should be fake!!

500 French Provincial Dining

A bespoke design for a local Portland family - we designed and built this cabriole dining table to go with this set of chairs.  A lot of our clients are taller than average, as were the people in this family.  They wanted plenty of leg room, and so the overall height of this piece is 1/2 inch higher than standard, and the apron height was chosen carefully to look proportionate but provide plenty of height.
This was the inspiration piece; however, this table was built with the intention to exactly duplicate the design shown on a pre-existing photo.  In the end, I was unsatisfied with the awkward way in which the legs joined the apron.

This design is, to my eye, a vast improvement over the table shown above; the apron on this one slants slightly outward at the bottom and therefore transitions into the leg seamlessly.

This is reclaimed douglas fir from an old Oregon barn; it was stained dark and given a good dose of wood hardener and lots of penetrating drying oils as a "living" finish.

This detail on the apron was meant to imitate or blend with the details on the chairs.  Scalloped beads are meant to evoke the classic French Provincial furniture treatment

View of side apron, showing hand carving and the gently slanted apron.

I was very pleased with these legs, and used this opportunity at re-designing to also re-work the leg curves.

Showing corner where leg and apron meet.  Square pegs at the joints provide extra texture.
